Justyce Schilz Ms. Lehmann English 2-1B 3 December 2019 “Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect” Review Have you ever wondered why we mimic other people? When you see someone else yawn, it gives you the sudden urge to yawn. One author presents facts on why we mimic other people. Frans de Waal’s article “Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect” is an interesting read because he explains how we andwhy we mimic other people. If you see someone else laughing, doesn’t it make you want to laugh? In the article, he explains how primates copy or imitate other primates. Frans de Waal has a biology degree and is the director of the Living Links Center at Yerkes Primate Center. De Waal is a published author who writes short articles that inform readers. His main purpose in writing is to inform and present facts to the reader. De Waal has a veryconversational writing style. The author is an unbiased writer. He writes for an average reader and tries to write so that the reader gets engaged in the article. The author’s sources are personal observations, but he is missing other outside sources to confirm his information. In the article, de Waal does not use section titles.I would like section titles becausethey help me understand what the section will be about. The section titles may also be easier to help the reader find certain information. His introduction draws the readers in because he makes it interesting and slowly eases them into the topic. He tries to get his reader more interested in the reading before he tells them the claim. The author’s organization is good because each point moves logically to the next point.De Waals transitions are effective, and the information in the article is relevant. The author’s introduction and conclusion tie together well. In de Waals introduction, his main claim is very well introduced. Throughout the article, the author restates his claim more than once. His conclusion restates and clarifies the main claim. De Waals article explains that primates mimic other primates. He utilizesexamples of monkey behavior and human behavior to explain his claim. The author’s qualifications work for informing audiences. In the article, there is no bibliography, sothis article does not work for in-depth learning. The reader may struggle without a bibliography because there is information missing that could be very useful to the reader. De Waal has a biology degree and is an unbiased writer. He is presenting facts and informing the reader. However, de Waal does not use section titles, and in my opinion, I feel like section titles are important so readers know what the section is mainly about if they are having a hard time understanding what thepoint of the section is. The section titles also helpfind information faster. In the article,de Waal’s main claim is well introduced, and he explains how primates mimic other primates. I would recommend this article because this article will inform you about how we mimic other primates in our lives. Works Cited De Waal, Frans. "Monkey See, Monkey Do, Monkey Connect."
